Garden Rules

The McKeesport Community Garden is a shared space run entirely by volunteers and all are welcome, therefore we ask individuals who visit the garden to follow a set of rules to ensure all who visit feel safe and that our grounds are well cared for.

Gardener Responsibilities

Gardeners who lease a bed are not only expected to tend to their own beds weekly, but are expected to help care for the community beds as well.  This includes, but is not limited to watering, weeding, planting, harvesting, etc.  These tasks must be completed weekly although watering must happen daily during the hottest months.  All gardeners take turns watering. Each gardener is responsible for cleaning out their own bed at the end of the season, but don't hesitate to ask for help!

Parking

Parking is permitted at the top of the garden on Walnut St. along the side walk, but please do not block the side walk with your vehicle so that those on foot and in wheelchairs can easily access the side walk. You may also park below the garden on the other side of the bike trail accessible by 13th St. Please know that motor vehicles are not permitted on the bike trail!

Gardening Tools

Garden Supplies

Garden tools such as hoses, rakes, hand tools, wheel barrows, shovels, gloves, etc. are supplied for you, but you are welcome to bring your own. Mark your own tools, gloves, etc. accordingly and be sure to take them with you when you leave.  If you use the designated garden tools/supplies please return everything to the shed at the end of your stay to ensure they don't get stolen or rust due to the elements.

Please know that we are an organic garden, therefore we do not use artificial chemicals in our soil, including pesticides used to control insects, diseases, and weeds or growing agents such as Miracle Grow.

The Grounds

The garden should only be accessed through the gate nearest the shed.  When you leave please ensure all gates are closed and covered over with the wire critter fence provided.  We have groundhogs and they love our veggies! Before you leave please ensure the hose is put away and ensure the hose box and shed are both closed and locked.

There is a porta potty nearby for all to use. Please clean up after yourself! This space is made available through a partnership between the McKeesport Community Garden and the McKeesport Trail Commission.

Time Commitment

The garden is about growing community.  We understand that not everyone is able to attend Workday Wednesdays and that's ok! You're welcome to tend the garden at any time. We do however ask that folks attend at least 4 between May-October. Each gardener is also expected to attend at least 2 out of 3 garden meetings per year.
