About Us
The McKeesport Community Garden was founded in 2012 by the Kiwanis Club of McKeesport - White Oak and since 2016, has been a program of Tube City Renaissance CDC. The garden was moved around to a few different locations before settling at its final destination at the corner of Walnut and 13th St in 2018. The garden has grown exponentially with the help of our friends at Grow Pittsburgh through their Sustainability Fund.
The Garden focuses on social health, and lends an opportunity for community members to grow their own vegetables. It provides a spot where neighbors can improve their quality of life by working together, growing healthy foods, in a healthy community environment.
The McKeesport Community Garden supplies soil and soil amendments for garden boxes as well as a water source and other support tools. There are a total of 34 raised beds for lease, 26 - 4ft.X8ft. lower boxes, and 8 - 4ft.X4ft. taller boxes that entail less bending. We also have 8 community shared beds. These are planted, and tended to by all garden volunteers. The harvests from these boxes supply our own Free Garden Stand on Walnut Street for anyone that stops by. We want to not only supply a space for growers, but also supply fresh produce to people who may not have easy access.
The McKeesport Community Garden is overseen by a steering committee that meets the first Wednesday of every month at the McKeesport Library during the winter months, and at the Garden during the growing season. Our weekly workday is Wednesdays from 5:30p-7:30p during the growing season. All are welcome to join!
With love and gratitude,
